This year, LBS LATAM will address the service monetization options that are currently in place in the region, both for the mass market (information on public transportation, for example) as well as for the premium segment (with the arrival of promising augmented-reality products and technologies).

The growing number of smartphones (by 2013 there will be some 1.4 billion worldwide), further broadband development, market maturity and the boom in social networks are factors that the industry must be thoroughly familiar with and must tap to expand and enhance its services.

The advertising and marketing industry has already reserved space for these products, though still at a slow pace. According to an ABI Research survey, however, the firms are prepared to invest some 1.8 billion dollars in location-based advertising by 2015.

With industry maturity will come new challenges such as finding detailed, accurate information on websites; providing continuous and up-to-date service; meeting users’ needs and respecting their privacy; and offering clear, user-friendly applications.
